Luis Gonzalez Palma
Luis Gonzalez Palma (Guatemala, 1957), architetto di formazione, è considerato uno dei più interessanti artisti dell’America Latina. La sua carriera nelle arti figurative è iniziata negli anni ’80 con gli ormai noti ritratti allegorici degli Indios guatemaltechi, discendenti dei Maya , nei quali miti e tradizioni culturali di questo antico popolo, oggi condannato dalla guerra civile all’apartheid, emergono con straordinaria forza espressiva da immagini iconiche e misteriose, brunite e rese uniche attraverso virtuose manipolazioni (graffiature, aggiunta di frammenti di tessuti , pergamene, pellicole,applicazione di foglia d’oro…) ed interventi pittorici che simulano la patina del tempo.
In sintesi, la sua opera “trascende spazio e tempo, suggerendo che misticismo, bellezza, dignità e dolore propri della condizione umana sono la vera materia della sua ricerca” (John Wood, Poems of Sorrow).
