Luis Gonzalez Palma

Luis Gonzalez Palma (Guatemala, 1957), an architect by training, is considered one of the most interesting artists in Latin America. His career in the visual arts began in the 1980s with the now well-known allegorical portraits of the Guatemalan Indios, descendants of the Maya. In these portraits, myths and cultural traditions of this ancient people—now condemned by civil war and apartheid—emerge with extraordinary expressive power from iconic and mysterious images. These images are burnished and made unique through virtuoso manipulations (scratches, additions of fabric fragments, parchment, film, application of gold leaf) and painterly interventions that simulate the patina of time.

In summary, his work “transcends space and time, suggesting that mysticism, beauty, dignity, and the pain inherent in human condition are the true subjects of his exploration” (John Wood, Poems of Sorrow)1. Luis Gonzalez Palma’s works are housed in museums and public collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, Museum of Fine Art Houston, High Museum of Art Atlanta, Center for Creative Photography Tucson, Fogg Museum of Boston, ICP New York, Museo de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires and Caracas, MEP and FNAC Paris, Musée de la Photographie de Charleroi, and Migros Collection Daros
